ALOR SETAR - Kedah's Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah has passed away at the age of 89 at 2.30pm on Monday.

News of the sultan’s demise was announced by Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah in a special press conference at Wisma Darul Aman, yesterday evening.

According to him, the late Kedah Ruler’s remains will be prepared for burial at 10.30am this morning and placed at Dewan Penghadapan Baru, Istana Anak Bukit where people will get  to pay their last respects to their sultan from 11 am till 12.30 pm followed by dignitaries at 12.30 pm till 1.30 pm.

“The people will get  to pay their last respects from 11 am till 12.30 pm followed by dignitaries at 12.30 pm till 1.30 pm.The cortege will pass Lebuhraya Darul Aman, Jalan Tun Razak and head on to Langgar Royal Mausoleum at 4pm,” he said.

Ahmad Bashah added, Kedah state flag and the national flag will be flown at half-mast for three days starting from the day of demise.

"The period of mourning is seven days starting from yesterday until September 17. During this time, all forms of entertainment and celebrations are canceled," he said.

Tuesday was declared a general public holiday for the entire state of Kedah, except for students attending the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).

“Let us pray to ALLAH SWT, may ALLAH place him together with the martyrs and solihin,"he said.

Tuanku Abdul Halim born on November 28, 1927 was the third son of Sultan Badlishah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah and Yang Mulia Tunku Sofia Tunku Mahmud

He was installed as the Sultan of Kedah on February 20, 1959.

The late Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah received his early education at Sekolah Melayu Titi Gajah and then went to the Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Setar.

In 1952, when he was the Raja Muda of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim attended Wadham College, Oxford, in London, graduating in social science and public administration.

Tuanku Abdul Halim married Tuanku Hajah Bahiyah Tuanku Abdul Rahman on March 10, 1956, and they were blessed with three princesses, Tunku Soraya, Tunku Sarina and Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz.

After the passing of Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah on August 26, 2003, Tuanku Abdul Halim married Che Puan Hajah Haminah Hamidun who was proclaimed the new Sultanah of Kedah on January 9, 2004, with the title of Tuanku Sultanah Hajah Haminah.

Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah made history when he became Agong for the second time in 2012 after being installed for the first time in 1970.
